Youjin Sung is a Korean gayageum* player. She is a member of the AsianArt Ensemble playing contemporary music and is actively engaged in the experimental music with gayageum. Born in London and based in Berlin, Simon Rose performs on baritone saxophone, his interest in improvisation has led to a wide variety of collaborations and writing. Youjin Sung and Simon Rose met at the Berlin club Sowieso in 2019. Sung’s curiosity about open form improvisation was matched by Rose’s long term curiosity about the potential of Korean musical instruments and tradition when applied in open improvisation. They have performed consistently as a duo since then.

Review extract of CD Map of Dreams Sung Rose 2020:

‘Simon Rose brings out the best in his baritone and gives it his all. Youjin Sung adds a subtlety and airy lightness that contrasts and paradoxically intertwines with his colleague’s shifting, heart-breaking sound. Both are in total communion around these hesitant pulsations that are found both in the slightly crazy fingerings of the Gayageum and the blower’s licks and breaks. I am absolutely delighted by this magnificent exchange between this extreme Eastern tradition open to the avant-garde and Western European free music: the two artists are one with each other and create haunted and bewitching soundscapes. Excellent!’
