Die 90’iger lassen sich nicht ohne Musik denken und gelten als eine Hochphase der elektronischen Musik. Turntablism und Clubkunst waren Markenzeichen. Das inzwischen mehr als 30-jährige Werk von Betty Stürmer ist vor allem geprägt durch die 90’iger, wo sie im Rahmen der Club-Art Bewegung für Furore sorgte. Bekannt sind ihre farbenfrohen, poppigen Club-Art-Malereien wie die Mini’s, Mega Shirts, Stretching und fashion news Serien. Damit möchte sie für 3 Tage mit euch in diese Zeit eintauchen. Während der Ausstellung „flashback“ läßt Sie Originalkassetten dazu laufen, zu der sie hauptsächlich in ihrem Studio in Alt-Treptow in Ostberlin kurz nach dem Mauerfall gearbeitet hat; Mitschnitte von Radio Massive/Kiss FM Radioshow aus der kultigen Drum’n´ Bass Zeit Mitte 90er Jahre.
Techno überrollte die Stadt musikalisch. Neben Technomusik entwickelten sich aber auch Stile die von England herüberschwappten und in den neuen Partylocations wie z.B. dem WTF und dem Icon zelebriert wurden. Dazu gehört vor allem Drum’n Bass und Jungle, aber auch Dancehall, der sich aus dem Yaam Club über die Stadt verteilte und auch Menschen mit afrikanischen Hintergrund anzog, so daß zum ersten Mal Partypublikum aus der Westberliner vorwiegend weißen Szene auf black Bohemians trafen, die ja in ihren eigenen Zirkeln, wie dem Slumberland oder der Junction Bar als Beispiel, schon lange in Berlin lebten, musizierten und ausgingen. Die Berliner Clubszene wurde damit multikultureller und bunter, genauso wie Drum’n Bass auch aus dem hybriden Background von Reggae und Dub geboren wurde.
Als klassiches Berlin BackUp bespielt der Filmemacher Knut Hoffmeister einen eigenen Raum zur Ausstellung, in dem er Kurzfilme, die sich im Kontext der Ausstellung bewegen, aus seinem umfassenden ikonischen Werk zeigt. Sowie die Malerei von Stürmer vielleicht nicht ohne DnB Musik, die sie zum Malen gehört hat , entstanden wäre, spielt Disco und 80’iger Sound in den Filmen von Hoffmeister eine tragende Rolle. Die Berliner Clubkultur der 90er hätte sich nicht ohne die Vorläufer der Clubs, also den Discos, entwickeln können. Der Mauerfall schaukelte das Nachtleben der Stadt in einen Ausnahmezustand ohne Sperrstunde hoch, dem grenzenlos billiger Raum zur Verfügung stand, in dem sich das Discoformat in eine improvisierte Partylocation mit DJ Set verwandelte. Im Kontext der Millionen Raver der Love Parade und der befreiten Künste verhüllten Christo und Jean-Claude den Reichstag. Die Strassenkämpfe der 80er waren Geschichte. Berlin wurde Kult. Knut Hoffmeister hat einige dieser Momente erfasst und in Kurzfilme gepackt. Die gibt es zu sehen.
Die DJ Culture, tragender Teil der Berliner Clubart, ist auf historisch-musikalischer Ebene ohne UK undenkbar. Wir freuen uns also besonders Sheila Stocking aus London zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung für ein Life Drumming Set alongside Rockateer Cryptonite on turntables zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung willkommen zu heißen.
Sheila spielt drum kit und djembe mit bands und DJ’s und lehrt dies auch. Die „in demand drummer“ organisierte die Veranstaltungsserie „Community Bass“ in Brixton, UK, wo sie die DJ’s mit Djembe begleitete. Im DJ Bereich tourt sie im Moment mit der clubserie „Sheila’s Selectors“ durch die Bars von London-Brixton, wo sie neue überraschende DJ’s vorstellt und sie mit life drumming begleitet.
Rockateer Cryptonite hat eine bedeutende Drum’n Bass und Jungle Sammlung auf Vinyl zusammengetragen und beherrscht durch seine langjährige Auftrittstätigkeit alle Skills im „vinyl djing on turntable“ meisterhaft und ist Mitbegründer der Fuckparade in Berlin und der legendären Cryptonite Flavour Partys seit 1998. Er ist regelmäßig mit Betty Stürmer aka Betty Party mit der Show „I know you got soul & bass“ am Start.
Gloria Liebherr wurde in den 90’igern “Jungle Queen” genannt und hat umtriebig und mit Leidenschaft Jungle in den WTF Club gebracht und hat maßgeblich am Aufbau der Jungle Szene in Berlin mitgewirkt. Ihre Aufgaben waren das booking, die PR und flyer Organisation. Darüberhinaus war sie auch als Ideengeberin in den Frauenprojekten Platform G Point, mit über 30 Frauen aus der elektronischen DJ und Produzentinnen Szene im Rahmen von Kunst und Club engagiert.

Trying to imagine the 90s without music is almost impossible. Actually they can be described as a peak phase of exploring new sounds when it comes to electronic music and wiith turntablism and clubart as trademarks who were drastically shaping this decade.
The Work of the Artist Betty Stürmer is majorly influenced by the 90s, especially as part of the ClubArt –Movement, where she caused a lot of sensation as an artist. Her colorful, hard-edged clubart paintings: the Mini’s, Mega Shirts, Stretching and fashion news series are known and celebrated. Throughout the 3 days of the exhibiton “flashback” visitors are kindly invited to dive into this crazy time. The artist Betty Stürmer will let the original cassettes run, to whom she mainly worked back then at her studio in Alt- Treptow, in East- Berlin, after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Recordings from Radio Massive/Kiss FM Radioshow directly orginating from the iconic Drum n’Bass Music time in mid of the 90s. Techno overrun the city of Berlin and next to that there where also a lot of other genres spilling over from England that were celebrated in party locations such as in WTF Bar or Icon. Mainly part of those genres were Drum n’Bass, Jungle and also Dancehall which spread from YAAM CLUB throughout Berlin City and also attracted more audience with african backgrounds. The WestBerlin white scene of party audience started to mix up more and more with the black Bohemian party scene in WestBerlin, that also has been present for a long time in places like Slumberland or Junction Bar for example. Through this music the clubscene of Berlin was getting more and more multicultural, the same way as Drum n’Bass was born out of this hybrid background originating from Reggae and Dub.
As a classic berlin backup filmmaker Knut Hoffmeister will, as part of the exhibition fill an own room with his short movies, that revolve around the context of the exhibition and stem from his iconic works. In the same way as listining to DnB music was a fundamental basis to the formation of Stürmers paintings, disco and 80s sound where major influence and foundation for the creation of Hoffmeisters short- movies. The Clubculture of Berlin with its existing clubs, could have not developed like it did, without its forerunner the existence of the discos. The fall of Berlin Wall was causing an exceptional state of nightlife without curfew, because there was suddenly a lot of cheap space, in which the disco format started to evolve to an improvised partylocation with DJ Set. In den context of the millions of ravers of the Love Parade and the liberated arts Christo und Jean-Claude covered the Reichstag. The street battles of the 80’ies where history. Berlin was getting cult. Knut Hoffmeister catched one of these moments in short films. They are to be seen.
From a music-historical perspective the DJ Culture, a fundamental part of Berlin ClubArt is unthinkable in its existence without the UK. We are very extraordinary happy to WELCOME Sheila Stocking from London to play a life drumming set alongside DJ Rockateer Cryptonite on turntables at the opening of the exhibition. Sheila plays drum kit and Djembe
with bands and DJ’s and also teaches Drum Kit und Djembe. This “ in demand drummer“ organized the event series “Community Bass” in Brixton, UK, accompanying the DJ’s on Djembe.. Regarding the field of DJing, she is at the moment touring with her club series “Sheila’s Selectors” through the Bars of London-Brixton, where she invites totally new overarching DJs together with spicing up the perfomance through live drumming.
DJ Rockateer Cryptonite collected a significant Vinyl collection of Drum’n Bass and Jungle music and has, through his long experience of DJ perfomance, masterful skills when it comes to vinyl djing on turntables. At the moment he is regulary perfoming with Betty Stürmer aka Betty Party in the show “ I know you got soul & bass”. He is one of the founders of Fuck Parade and the legendary Cryptonite flavour partys since back in 1998.
Gloria Liebherr/questionround with WTF booker for jungle/drum’n bass
We are looking forward to welcome Gloria Liebherr in a questionround. In the 90’s she was celebrated as the „Jungle Queen“ in Berlin and initiated Jungle in the WTF Club as a booker and PR lady, distributing the flyers in the city. She contributed significantly to the construction of Jungle in Berlin. Furhermore she was involved in womanprojects in the electronic dj and producer scene like Platform G Point, with over 30 women framed in art and club.
